The Whimsical Grassland Swan Almanac (or simply W.G. Swan) is a unique digital publication and cultural project that combines retro aesthetics, history and whimsical storytelling. It is not just a newsletter, but a kind of portal to a parallel, mystical Bulgaria, dressed in the clothes of the Victorian era and the old Bulgarian speech.
The Almanac relies on a “new Bulgarian old style” (using pre-reform spelling such as “Ъ” and “Ѣ”), which transports the reader to the atmosphere of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visually and textually, it imitates the classic Revival and post-liberation editions.
The project revives Bulgarian memory through unconventional and often provocative themes — from “home medicine” and “secrets of the old kitchen” to metaphysical statements about the origin of the world and dinosaurs.
At the heart lies the legend of W.G. Swan (The Bizarre Pasture Swan) — a symbol of engineering audacity and creative freedom, which connects the banks of the Danube with the waters of the Black Sea and Varna.
The Almanac preaches the idea of "slow living" and making sense of history, opposing modern digital noise through a deeper, philosophical and often satirical reading of reality.
